RavensFire kicked off the 2017 St. Patrick’s Day celebrations with a céili benefit dance for the Rochester Irish Fest.
The chefs at the Bleu Duck Kitchens served traditional Irish Stew, soda bread, Dubliner cheese and other favorites. The crowd was eager to dance, especially when the band opened with the favorite Whiskey in a Jar. That got the hands clapping and the feet stomping. We had a great time playing dance tunes with Avin Honecker Sherman calling the dance. For those of you unfamiliar with a céili, it’s a series of simple dance moves taken under the direction of a caller, who tells you what to do. Even those of us who have trouble counting to three while moving our feet can do it! Between dance tunes, the crowd enjoyed traditional ballads like Reilly’s Daughter, Westering Home and more.
When they weren’t dancing, people shared stories of trips to Ireland and talked about the upcoming Rochester Irish Festival. Now that they’ve got the steps figured out, they’re ready for the next céili.
The band had a great evening, demonstrated by the quote from the article in last week’s 507 Magazine, “If the crowd loves you, they buy you pints of Guinness!” The Guinness was good.
